Design Firm Hired for New Area Coliseum

Longview, TX –Preliminary design work for what county and city officials are calling a multi-purpose coliseum has started, and plans for the estimated $18.5 million facility could be presented to the community within three months.

Longview Assistant City Manager Chuck Ewings said Johnson & Pace, an architectural group from Longview, has been hired to begin the initial design work. The local firm is teaming with Hahnfeld Hoffer Stanford, a Dallas-based architectural firm, to complete the center's design within a 60-to 90-day period. The center most likely will be built adjacent to the Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center, Ewings said.

Though a joint venture between the city and county, cost of the design work-$1.2 million-will be paid by the city. The funds were set aside in the city's 2007-08 budget from funds generated from early debt retirement.

Ewings said it was too early to know how large the coliseum would be, but seating is expected to be between 4,000 and 7,500 people - large enough to accomodate a variety of events including dog shows, basketball games, rodeos, concert events, and possibly even an ice hockey team. "Hopefully, this will be something that will provide entertainment options for residents of the county and also attract tourists," Ewings said.

In February, a community-resident group charged with identifying city bond election projects that would be presented to voters in May, opted not to include the multi-purpose center because of the cost. In early spring, Mayor Jay Dean went to county commissioners with a resolution signed by mayors from all municipalities of the community. The resolution requested that the county team with the city of Longview to build a multi-purpose center, said County Judge Bill Stoudt. "That was pretty impressive when Mayor Dean brought that to us," Stoudt said.

As a part of the partnership, the county will pay for the bulk of construction costs. Stoudt said the county's financial planners determined roughly $15 million could be contributed toward the expenditure without jeopardizing the financial strength and solidarity of the county. "Anything above in the neighborhood of $15 million, the City will have to take over," he said.

Once the preliminary designs are developed, Stoudt said they would be presented in public meetings at the courthouse. "We don't know how those meetings will be scheduled, or how many meetings will be needed to get a final product we can all be happy with," he said.

Local Firm Designing Sysco Facility

Longview, TX –Johnson & Pace, a Longview firm that offers engineering, architecture and land surveying services, is designing the new distribution center that food supplier Sysco plans to build just outside Longview. A May 8 groundbreaking is set for the center, which will be built on the west side of Texas 149/Estes Parkway, south of Interstate 20 and just outside the Longview city limits. Construction should be complete in about a year, Johnson & Pace reported.

Johnson & Pace is led by Delcine Johnson, president, and F. Wade Johnson and Joe W. Hart, III, principals. Rick Malloy is manager of the firm's architecture department and the Sysco project. Malloy explained that the project is a "design-build contract." Sysco hired Lee Lewis Construction in Lubbock to build the facility, and Lee Lewis contracted with Johnson & Pace for the architecture and civil, structural and mechanical engineering. Malloy said his firm is about halfway into the project.

The $36 million facility will be on a 71-acre site, with about 50 acres of that developed. Malloy said it will consist of a 300,000-square-foot warehouse- about half of which will be refrigerated areas at four different temperature levels, and a two-story, 65,000-square-foot office.
